England continues to exterminate itself

I think for many of us, England is one of the old world countries inextricably entwined with images of Christmas. When I think of England, I think of Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol; of the Christmas tree, which the Germanic British royals elevated from a quaint German custom into a national Anglo tradition; and, of course, of classic Christmas carols, such as Hark! the Herald Angels Sing, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, Good King Wenceslas, Ding Dong Merrily on High, and the ubiquitous (if you have children) Twelve Days of Christmas.

I need to purge all these thoughts from my mind, though. The brainwashed British, in thrall to political correctness and afraid of threats both legal and political, are erasing Christmas from the national discourse:

Three out of four employers have banned Christmas decorations from their offices for fear of offending other faiths, a report claimed yesterday.

Law firm Peninsula said the workplace was becoming caught up in the “wave” of political correctness affecting festive traditions. A survey of 2,300 employers found that 74 per cent had banned decorations because they were worried about offending other faiths, while half thought they made offices look unprofessional.

Peter Done, managing director of Peninsula, said the findings followed a number of cases involving local authorities banning festive activities and decorations in high streets and shopping centres.

“Christmas trees and decorations may well be a thing of the past in many workplaces this Christmas as political correctness culture has spread to the workplace.

Although employers who are enforcing the ban are sceptical and dismayed by this trend, they feel that they have little choice in the matter due to the threat of litigation; as they have to protect themselves, their reputation and their livelihood.”

In other words, while we in America are fussing about Target’s decision to ban the Salvation Army yet again, and lauding Wal-Mart’s decision to utter the dread “C” word (that would be “Christmas”), the British are quietly but effectively exterminating themselves, not by killing their bodies, but by wiping out their national character.

By the way, you’ve probably noticed that the article from which I quoted quite coyly doesn’t mention which external pressures are causing British employers (as well as towns) to retreat from the age old Christmas celebrations that have characterized Britain in one form or another since the end of Pagan times. The rest of the article, which I didn’t quote here, is equally quiet about those forces against British tradition. I think, though, that if we all put our heads together we can figure it out. (Hint: It’s probably not the Jews.)

Robert Kennedy created a Chinese curse along the lines of “May you live in interesting times.” He was on to something. Nothing can remain unchanged. Whether we like it or not, the world is in constant flux. It’s just that now it seems to be in more flux than usual and, as part of that, we’re definitely seeing the passing of the old guard.

My kids will grow up knowing an England that bears little relationship to the England of the past which, while it saw various upheavals over the centuries, was always responding to strictly British pressures, all of which played out British themes and cultures. What we’re seeing now is more akin to the changes England last saw in 1066, when foreign invaders mounted a brutal attack on her soil and took over her culture. The only difference now, almost a thousand years later, is that, while the indigenous Brits in 1066 put up a fight before the takeover, the current Brits are simply laying out the red carpet for their new overlords.

UPDATE: I’d barely published this story when I discovered an LGF story about England that I’d missed earlier today: “A veiled Muslim woman will deliver this year’s alternative Christmas speech on Channel 4, the broadcaster has said.” Let the cultural death watch continue.

UPDATE II: When I wrote the above I assumed that in Britain, as in France, the Muslims have become a sizable block. For example, in France, Muslims are now 5-10% of the population, although that percentage is a bit misleading, because it hides the fact that they’re a larger part of the young population — that is, French Muslims are the future (or so I gather from Mark Steyn). In Britain, however, Muslims are a mere 2.7% of the population. Admittedly, out of a population of 60,609,153 that means 1,636,447 which is a fair number of people, but it’s still an itsy-bitsy part of the whole. Why, then, are the British so frightened of this population group? It may be almost two million people but, in theory, it can still be squashed like a bug.

Part of the answer lies in the squeaky wheel area. Muslims are vocal in the disapproval of anything that offends their sensibilities, and people who are less confrontational, and the average Brit probably is, will always back down.

But I think another part of the answer lies in the fact that actual Muslims — not all Muslims, of course, but Muslims nevertheless — have engaged in actual acts of violence. To give this a context, let me point to Hitler’s demonizing the Jews. German Jews were, in fact, an exceptionally law-abiding, well-behaved group. All that Hitler could point to were shadowy, unproven and unprovable, monetary conspiracies and to the intangible of race pollution. Despite the hysteria, there were no manifest Jewish acts to support Hitler’s claims.

The opposite is true with the Muslims. Although we’re busy painting Islam as a religion of peace — and there is no doubt that the majority of Muslims are peaceful people — the fact remains that there is an active majority engaged in spectacularly violent acts. 9/11 is not a shadowy economic conspiracy, it’s the murder of almost 3,000 people. Same for 7/7. Same for the acts of bloodshed in Holland, Spain, France, Australia, Bali, Indonesia, the Phillipines, the Sudan, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Egypt, and on and on and on. You don’t need to look under tables or peer into dark corners to see the conspiracy — it’s playing out in front of us, large as life and twice as natural.

And so I think the British, quite simply, are cowed. The troublemakers may be only a fraction of a fraction, a small portion of those 1,636,447 Muslims in the UK, but that small percentage has shown a willingness to act, and it’s not shy about making threats about further violent action. And so, while the British government has weapons and warriors, the average Brit has no faith in the government’s willingness or even its ability to put down the revolution within. The average Brit responds to this fact, day by day, by giving a little more appeasement away, in the always futile hope that just a little more will finally be enough.
