Information wanted re French health care system

I was talking with someone the other day who is actually worried about the changes being wrought in the American health care system.  However, his touchstone, his security blanket regarding the socialization of American medicine is France.  France, he told me, has a great health care system that is the envy of the world.  Sweden too.

I have to admit to being doubtful about these claims.  My suspicions are threefold:  (a) I suspect they’re messing with the data, as many countries do with infant mortality rates; (b) I wonder if French expectations aren’t lower than ours are; and (c) I wonder how the French medical system is holding up under the dual onslaughts of economic collapse and mass immigration.  The problem is, though, that I don’t know; I just suspect and wonder, based on what I know about socialized medicine in other countries.

Do any of you know what’s going on in France and Sweden when it comes to health care?  If you have links you can send me that I can forward to my friend, I’d really appreciate that.
